Looking at Saturday's MIAA, KCAC and Jayhawk games

MIAA

Washburn (3-3 overall, 1-3 league) at Pittsburg State (3-3, 1-3), 2 p.m. — The winning team can claim a much-needed victory over its rival and salvage its season. The losing team can declare 2010 an unmitigated disaster.  So at least the stakes aren't very high. Washburn started the season in the Top 10 and has fallen off the map with a disastrous start but bounced back last week with its first league win over Nebraska-Omaha. Pittsburg State, with first-year coach Tim Beck, is trying to avoid back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since the Carter administration. My pick: Washburn

Emporia State (5-2, 3-2) at No. 7 Northwest Missouri (4-1, 4-0), 1 p.m.  – NW Missouri hasn’t lost a league game in 9 years. If the Hornets can make this a competitive game, that’s as good as a win for ESU. My pick: Emporia State

Fort Hays State (3-3, 1-3) at Nebraska-Omaha (2-4, 2-2), 1 p.m. – Tigers might be able to catch the Mavs reeling right here after their loss to Washburn last week, although Neb-O usually plays good at home. My pick: Fort Hays State

KCAC

No. 17 Kansas Wesleyan (5-0, 4-0) at No. 7 McPherson (5-0, 4-0) — The Bulldogs get their fourth Top 25 opponent to start the season, and can essentially seal the KCAC title with a win here. Kansas Wesleyan quarterback Doug Pierce has been on fire lately, earning NAIA offensive player of the week honors after throwing for 306 yards and five touchdowns and running for 105 yards and a score in last Saturday's 66-49 win over Bethany. My pick: McPherson

Peru State (2-4) at Friends (4-1, 4-1), 1:30 p.m. – Good test for Falcons, and remember any slip-up could cost them a shot at NAIA playoffs.

Southwestern (1-4, 1-3) at Bethany (3-2, 2-2), 1:30 p.m. – Bethany showed it could put up points in a 66-49 loss to KWU last weekend, and should have some confidence built up for The Jinx. Plus, it’s homecoming weekend in Lindsborg. Rokar Stokar. My pick: Bethany

Bethel (0-5, 0-4) at Saint Mary (0-5, 0-4), 1:30 p.m. – Somebody’s gotta win. My pick: Saint Mary

Sterling (2-3, 1-3) at Tabor (1-4, 1-3), 2 p.m. – Tabor, even with their 1 win, is by far the most improved team in the KCAC this year. Big upset here. My pick: Tabor

JAYHAWK

Dodge City (0-6, 0-5) at Fort Scott (1-6, 1-4), 1 p.m. – Dude. My pick: Fort Scott

Independence (2-4, 2-3) at Air Force Prep (4-3), 2 p.m. – AFP is as good this year as they’ve ever been and Indy is much improved. Should be a great game, but that’s a loooooong road trip. My pick: Air Force Prep

Garden City (2-4, 1-3) at No. 2 Hutchinson (6-0, 4-0), 7 p.m. – Busters cling to playoff hopes by a thread, and Blue Dragons want nothing more than to stomp them out and set up next week’s showdown with Butler. My pick: Hutchinson

No. 1 Butler (7-0, 5-0) at No. 3 Coffeyville (6-0, 4-0), 7 p.m. – I’ll be there. What else do you need to know? Oh yeah, there will also be massive DI/NFL talent on both sides. My pick: Butler (toughest call I’ve had all year)
