Another heat record falls in Wichita

The mercury hit 109 in Wichita at 3:06 p.m., setting a record for Aug. 3.

That tops the old mark of 108 set in 1964 – when LBJ was in the White House, the Billboard charts were topped by songs such as the Beatles’ “Can’t Buy Me Love,” the Supremes with “Come See About Me,” and “Chapel of Love” by the Dixie Cups.

How long ago is 1964? It’s the last time a team from Cleveland won a championship, with the Browns blanking the Baltimore Colts 27-0 for the NFL title.

Incidentally, forecasters say the temperature may not be done climbing in Wichita today. Stay tuned.

An excessive-heat warning remains in effect until 9 p.m.

Today marked Wichita’s fifth-consecutive day at the century mark or higher; the record stretch was 20 days in a row, set in August 1936.
