Price of having too many false alarms

Wichita police officers and firefighters answer nearly 25,000 false alarms generated by security or other systems a year — what a waste. And whenever they are busy responding to a false alarm, they are unavailable to respond to a real emergency. In that context, the proposed alarm registration fees on today's Wichita City Council agenda seem modest — $1 a month for residences and $3 a month for businesses, with the bill for false alarms adding up from $40 (second call) to $350 (10th) for security alarms and from $100 (second call) to $750 (10th) for fire alarms.
