Including the $36 million in recently authorized bonds, the cost of renovating the state Capitol building now totals $286 million. That has a lot of people choking. But it made Topeka Capital-Journal columnist Ric Anderson wonder how that total compares with other large building projects. He noted that the Capitol project is more than Wichita's new Intrust Bank Arena, which "cost a mere $196 million." But it's far less than the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium, which cost $1.2 billion. The Capitol is also costing about $15 million more than the renovation of the Kansas City Royals' stadium. "That means," Anderson wrote, "Kansans could have bankrolled the entire upgrade and had enough left over to buy, even at stadium prices, more than 2 million beers."
