Broadview ready for its overdue makeover

The Broadview Hotel was able to kick off its long-awaited renovation last week — with a liquidation sale that attracted thousands of shoppers — thanks to the Legislature's swift action to correct a year-old problem with the state's historic-tax-credit program. Good for lawmakers and Gov. Mark Parkinson, who signed the bill Monday, for recognizing that uncapping the program to allow $4 million and $5 million in tax credits for the project was crucial to the $28 million transformation into the Drury Plaza Broadview Hotel. The regret in seeing the Broadview closed for as long as a year is offset by the knowledge that when it reopens — and downtown again has the use of its badly needed rooms — the elegant 88-year-old hotel not only will have the best river views in town but will look better than ever itself.
