Motivated voters favor GOP

Neither political party fared well in Pew Research Center surveys released this week, as Democrats had a 38 percent favorability rating and Republicans a 37 percent rating. And all incumbents should be concerned that only 22 percent of Americans say they trust the federal government (the lowest total in half a century) and 65 percent have an unfavorable view of Congress. But Republicans have a strong electoral edge in that those surveyed who were most likely to go to the polls in November were Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. For example, independents who are highly committed to voting this year favored Republican candidates 66 to 13 percent.
