State Sen. Jean Schodorf, R-Wichita, a candidate for the 4th Congressional District seat, said at the weekend debate that she supports prohibiting insurance companies from denying coverage or care based on pre-existing conditions. A large majority of the public agrees, according to opinion polls. But the key to such a ban is requiring everyone to have insurance. Otherwise, some people will wait until they have a serious health problem before buying insurance, which isn't fair to the insurance companies. That's why the House GOP health care reform plan, which didn't include a health insurance mandate, didn't include this ban.
