Wichita is a low tax point on the prairie

A report this year by the Tax Foundation in Washington, D.C., ranked Sedgwick County as having the lowest property-tax burden among the state's seven most populous counties. And among 20 cities and towns in Sedgwick County, Wichita has the lowest combined city, school, state and county property-tax rate — even after the approval last year of USD 259's $370 million bond issue. Wichita's comparatively low tax rate doesn't mean that local officials should feel free to raise taxes. But contrary to what many residents think, Wichita doesn't have sky-high tax rates.
