Kansas comparatively scandal-free

With former Missouri House Speaker Rod Jetton facing a felony assault charge, Kansas City Star columnist Mike Hendricks wondered why Kansas politics is comparatively scandal-free. (Two of Jetton's predecessors did time, as have other Missouri lawmakers and pols.) "Could it be the Pendergast curse or something?" Hendricks asked, referring to "Boss Tom" Pendergast (in photo), whose corrupt political machine ruled Kansas City during the Depression. In Kansas, there was that attorney general's extramarital affair a few years ago, Hendricks noted. But "I can't even remember the last time a Kansas officeholder on the state level needed to make bail."
