Spotlight on Newman-Fort Hays State showdown

JARAY MATHEWSThe Newman men’s basketball team has a huge game Monday night at Fort Hays State, which should be one of the better teams in the MIAA. After trouncing Pittsburg State last week in Wichita. Newman also gets a shot at Emporia State in Emporia on Dec. 9.

How big would it be if Newman could go 2-1 — or sweep — its three in-state MIAA foes this year? It would be HUGE, and for a couple of different reasons: Recruiting, recruiting & recruiting. Newman has struggled playing the MIAA in multiple sports in the past, but you can really see the gap closing the last couple of years since the Jets became a full-fledged DII school.

Oh, and check out Newman’s Jaray Mathews (up top) at least once this season, because dude is a rebounding machine. Seriously, just go see him once this year. Come on. They play on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There’s no excuse. Just do it.

COMING SOON: Watch this week for bowl game previews on games in Hutchinson (Dec. 5, Salt City Bowl) and the Citizens Bank Bowl in Pittsburg on Dec. 6 aka the NJCAA national championship game between No. 1 Fort Scott and No. 2 Blinn. I’ll be doing the advance coverage and actually be at both games next weekend. So there’s that.

Out. TA.
