Alan Jilka, a former three-term mayor of Salina, has become the first Democrat to enter the race for the 1st Congressional District seat.
In announcing his candidacy, Jilka cited energy independence, national debt reduction and comprehensive immigration reform as the key issues he wants to address in Washington.
At least six Republicans are expected to contend for the GOP nomination for the seat, which is being vacated by Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Hays.
Moran is running against Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard, for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Sam Brownback.
