Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Topeka, says she was unaware of the negative connotation when she said at a recent forum that the GOP was still searching for a "great white hope" to stop President Obama's political agenda. But even if you don't know the racist history of the phrase, it's not hard to imagine that it could be considered offensive, particularly when Obama is African-American and the overwhelming majority of GOP voters and politicians are white. Jenkins surely didn't intend her comment that way, but she should be more thoughtful about what she says.
