WICHITA — NewMarket Square is going to be home to a new Michael's.
It’s not clear what will happen with the arts-and-crafts store’s location at 6610 W. Kellogg. No one with Michael’s could be reached for comment.
The new store will be two doors down from where the new Best Buy is opening.
Construction will begin on Michael's and a 10,000-square-foot building next to it by the end of the month.
"With Best Buy, Michael's and the 10,000-square-foot building, that brings our total building area out there to 780,000 square feet," says Jerry Jones of Slawson Cos., the NewMarket developer.
He's not yet sure if the 10,000-square-foot space will be divided between two tenants or used by only one.
"We're close on deals for (there)," Jones says.
"We'll be delivering possession to those tenants right after the first of the year," he says.
After that, Jones says, "It usually takes four to six weeks to get a store open."
There's not a set opening date for Best Buy yet.
"They have latitude when they open their store," Jones says. "I would still be very surprised if they don't open early this fall."
This phase of NewMarket's development is shaped like an L, with several storefronts extending to the west and south of Michael's.
"It's important that it bridges the north end of the center back to the south end of the center, and it sets up the last piece of that main body of NewMarket Square," Jones says.
The 110,000-square-foot addition will link to the area where Petco, Sports Authority and Bed Bath & Beyond are.
The final piece near this addition is a 30,000-square-foot building by NewMarket's main entrance and plaza.
Then, Jones says he'll turn his attention to the fifth phase of NewMarket's development, which is north of SuperTarget.
He's not sure how soon that will happen.
"It's hard to tell," Jones says. "That will be dictated by the market."
