The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced today that its Class 1A members have approved a measure to split the classification into a large and small division for volleyball, basketball and scholar’s bowl.
The proposal, which begins in the 2010-11 school year, was approved by mail ballots from 57 schools. Twenty-one voted against and 23 did not return ballots.
Class 1A is already divided essentially into three divisions for football — Class 2-1A, which plays 11-man; and 8-man Divisions I and II.
Class 1A has the most schools of any classification (104 in 2008-09), compared with 64 in 2A, 3A and 4A; 32 in 5A and 6A.

The Hays Daily News reported that Fort Hays State had been told it would likely be the host for the larger division’s basketball tournaments, as well as both divisions’ volleyball tournaments.
