Top seed, and defending state champions, Topeka Seaman defeat Bishop Meige 5-2 in the first game here at Topeka.
The game wasn’t easy for the Vikings. Meige had a 2-1 lead in the top of the 5th, and the score was tied heading into the bottom of the sixth. But Meige misplayed a ball at short (one of its three errors) with two outs, allowing the Vikings base runner to score and the inning to stay alive. Robbie Rea hit a 2 RBI double the next at-bat to put the game out of reach.
The Stangs played like a team that deserved to be at the state tournament. Don’t know if it was Topeka Seaman underestimating, or Bishop Meige rising to the occasion, but the defending champions got a test in the first round.
KC Turner and St. Thomas Aquinas is about to get underway. Andover Central (17-3) and Salina South (13-9) should begin at about 4:00. I’ll update more once that game starts.
