Wichita man convicted of attempted murder

The Wichita Eagle

A Sedgwick County jury this week convicted a 43-year-old man of beating and trying to strangle his girlfriend to death in a Wichita motel room last year.

John B. Koop faces up to 21 years in prison when he is sentenced on Oct. 27 on counts of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery.

Authorities arrested Koop on April 21, 2015, after his girlfriend told police he punched and choked her, tried to smother her and threatened to kill her because he became angry that she’d asked for a ride.

Koop told officers he grabbed the woman’s throat to quell her screams, according to court records, and that he “wanted her dead.”

The woman suffered a broken nose, bruising, swelling and scratches.
