A man suspected of setting wood pallets on fire by the downtown YMCA was charged Thursday with arson, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said.
Michael D. Spangler, 29, was arrested and jailed Wednesday after he was found near the burning pile of pallets at 402 N. Market. Authorities say he was unclothed and threatening and hampering the efforts of firefighters dousing the flames. He may have been trying to keep warm, a fire official has said.
Spangler remained in Sedgwick County Jail on Thursday and is due back in court March 17. He could be sentenced to up to 34 months in prison if he’s convicted of the charge.
