Winfield Police Chief Danny Parker said Thursday that police have a suspect in custody in the shooting death of a man early New Year’s morning at a bar in the Cowley County town.

Parker said officers were called about 1:30 a.m. Thursday to Hot Shotz bar on Eighth Avenue. When they arrived they found the shooting victim, who was in his early 30s. Rescuers took him to William Newton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The bar was crowded at the time of the shooting, so there are several witnesses, Parker said.

“The shooting appeared to have been caused by some verbal exchange between a couple of people and the shooter then pulled out a weapon and shot the victim,” Parker said.

Police arrested the suspect, who is in his early 40s, about 9 a.m. at a house in Winfield.
