Deonsha Paige was out in the street early Sunday, pacing and holding a gun, upset over the death of a relative, authorities said.
Therreshia Pittman, 19, went outside the house – where a family gathering was underway inside – and implored her boyfriend to return inside. Pittman and others “put their hands on him” to try to pull Paige out of the street at 10th and Harding, Wichita police Lt. Jeff Gilmore said.
Paige’s gun went off as his arm was being pulled, and Pittman was shot once in the chest. She wasn’t breathing when an ambulance arrived, according to a police document. She was pronounced dead at Wesley Medical Center at 2:37 a.m.
Paige, 19, was arrested later Sunday on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and felony possession of a firearm. Gilmore said Paige had a prior felony conviction.

“He was extremely upset over the death of a family member,” Gilmore said of Paige.
Police would not discuss the nature of the relative’s death. Gilmore said there is no evidence the gun was fired intentionally.
