A woman was fatally wounded in a shooting in Oaklawn, authorities said Wednesday.
The shooting was reported just before midnight Tuesday at 5041 S. Elmhurst, a Sedgwick County dispatcher said. That’s southwest of K-15 and 47th Street South, a few blocks west of Oaklawn Elementary.
Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputies responding to the 911 call found a woman lying in the front yard with a single gunshot wound to her chest, Capt. Lt. Jason Gill said. She was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where she died about an hour and a half later.
She has been identified as Robin Buckley, 54, Capt. Greg Pollock said.
Donald Cook, 52, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of criminal possession of a firearm and interfering with law enforcement in connection with the incident. But Cook is not the man who fired the gun, Pollock said.
A domestic violence incident preceded the shooting, Pollock said. A man called 911 to say he had shot someone.
“We believe the shooting occurred inside the house,” Pollock said.
Buckley then staggered outside and collapsed in the front lawn. She did not live at the house, Pollock said. The man who claims to have fired the shot is an acquaintance of Buckley’s sister, Pollock said.
That man has not been arrested. He is undergoing medical care not related to the incident, Pollock said.
There were five people inside the small white house in a residential area of Oaklawn at the time of the shooting, he said. Investigators are talking to others present to sort out the circumstances.
The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine what, if any, charges are filed in the incident, Pollock said.
