VIDEO: Wichita police discuss North Meridian shootings
One man is dead and two men are in critical condition after a man shot three men in the head who he said were trying to recover drug money from him, Wichita police said Friday.
The 22-year-old suspect told police that the three victims escorted him by car Thursday night to two different family members' houses, where he pleaded with his family to give him the money that he owed.
The suspect then shot the three men in the head, killing the driver, 21, and critically injuring the other two, 21 and 22, police said. A witness saw the car swerve, strike several objects and crash into a field south of the 5300 block of North Meridian, according to police Lt. Todd Ojile.
The suspect then ran south from the car toward a nearby house, where he approached its inhabitants, who were outside, and confessed to the strangers that he had shot three men, Ojile said. A female resident went from the house to the scene of the accident where the police had recently arrived and told the officers about the three men in the car.
The driver was pronounced dead on the scene and the other two men were transported to Via Christi Hospital St Francis in critical condition. No other weapons were located in the vehicle, Ojile said.
The suspect returned to the scene and turned himself into police, who took him in for questioning and then booked him on suspicion of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
After this shooting and the fatal shooting Thursday night on South San Pablo, there are 24 homicides in Wichita this year.
