Police have made an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old man last week.
Joe Earl Walker, 51, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail late Wednesday night, Lt. James Espinoza said Thursday. Walker was inside the house at 1428 N. Lorraine on Aug. 10 when Dorce Pittman approached the house to confront his ex-girlfriend, authorities have said.
The woman did not come outside, police reported the day after the incident, and Pittman fired a shot at the back wall of the house. Initially, police said they had no evidence that the two people inside the house had returned fire.
“They first denied it,” Lt. Todd Ojile said in an e-mailed response to questions. “The investigation revealed that they had.”
One of those shots struck Pittman in the head as he ran east on 14th Street. Pittman collapsed and died in the street.
Walker is being held on a $150,000 bond, jail records show, and was booked on suspicion of two counts of a felon in possession of a firearm and two drug-related offenses. He was not booked on suspicion of homicide, however.
“People have the right to defend themselves,” Espinoza said.
Evidence in the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office on Monday, Ojile said.
