Armed man who prompted SWAT response and closed streets in downtown Wichita surrenders

A man is in custody after an hours-long standoff that warranted a large police presence and closed streets in downtown Wichita.

Officers received a call around 10:51 a.m. Monday about a domestic disturbance with a gun in an apartment in the 200 block of North Mosley, Wichita Police Public Information Officer Andrew Ford said.

The 911 caller, a woman in the apartment, said one man in the unit pointed a weapon at another.

During the standoff, police closed 1st Street between Mead and Washington and Mosley between 1st and 2nd. The law enforcement agency also deployed drones.

The SWAT team arrived around 3:30 p.m.

The man did not cooperate through multiple failed contact attempts but eventually surrendered after SWAT entered the apartment, which led to a “safe resolution to this incident,” Rick Pena with the Wichita Police Department said Monday evening.

In a Facebook post published by the department, WPD said once they entered the apartment and deployed technology the suspect then complied.

The victim, police said, left the apartment before officers arrived at the scene.

Police said around 6:30 p.m. that the man, who had been armed with a loaded AR-15-style rifle, had been taken into custody. The man, according to arrest records, is 50 and lived at the building. The Wichita Eagle does not name people who have been arrested unless they are formally charged.

The police department confirmed no shots were fired during the standoff.
