Wichita resident recounts bullets flying into his room during Friday shooting spree

This is a breaking story and will be updated

It was Friday night and Kyle Walker was in bed sleeping along with his dog, Hound, inside their north Wichita home when gunshots came flying into his room.

“I didn’t really realize what was going on,” Walker recounted of the shooting. “I didn’t know they were gunshots at the time, I just kind of hit the deck beside my bed and waited for [the shooting] to stop.”

The crime spree ended when two Wichita officers shot a 33-year-old man multiple times at a gas station on Broadway after he pointed a gun at them, according to the Wichita Police Department.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition, ending a crime spree where he reportedly stole a bicycle from two people at gunpoint, shot at Walker’s house that struck his dog, shot at someone after a failed carjacking, and then shot two more people in separate incidents.

Police also found a man dead from gunshot wounds in a city park but are unable to say whether that shooting is related to the others.

“During this investigation, a man with apparent gunshot wounds was located dead at a park near 13th and Main,” police said. “Currently, we are unable to say if this homicide is related to the other random shootings.”

Police have not discussed a possible motive for the shootings.

Walker’s recount

When the shooting began, Walker said he immediately got up and went to his front door and saw and heard a man yelling antagonistically at him.

“’Yeah, you stay in the house now ... you don’t want to come out here anymore, do you?’ ... stuff like that,” Walker said. “Eventually he took off.”

Police responded to the shooting at 8:52 p.m.

Surveillance camera video given to the Eagle by Walker shows the assailant walking up to the porch, to where the suspect shot the front door once before moving to the right and firing multiple rounds into the bedroom window.

That’s when Walker noticed “quite a lot” of blood in the house and on his legs. He wasn’t struck by bullets, but his dog was. Hound was struck once in her back right hind leg. She was taken to a local veterinary hospital and is now recovering.

“[the bullet] went all the way throughout the left [hind leg] clean,” Walker said. “She’s in a lot of pain and can’t move very well, but the vet said she should be perfectly fine.”

From the front to the back of the house, Walker counted at least 40 bullet holes.

“The shooting lasted for about 10 seconds, but felt like a lot longer at the time,” Walker said.

A GoFundMe has been created to help pay for Hound’s vet bills and additional expected follow-up visits.

More details on the shootings were expected to be released later Monday by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
