A 38-year-old man died after a shooting Sunday at an apartment complex in northeast Wichita.

On Tuesday, Wichita police identified the shooting victim as 38-year-old Daryl Clark of Wichita. The suspect, Mercedes Muldrew, 35, of Wichita, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail at 1:35 a.m. on Monday, records show.

She was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Clark, a criminal court complaint filed Wednesday shows.

Officers responded to a shooting call at 5:40 p.m. at the Inwood Crossing Apartments near K-96 and Rock Road. They found Clark suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, Wichita police spokesperson Andrew Ford said.

Clark was taken to the hospital where he died at 6:22 p.m.

Detectives said an argument allegedly started between Clark and Muldrew. The argument escalated when Clark physically assaulted Muldrew, police said.

“The situation further escalated when the suspect brandished a handgun and fired one shot, striking the victim in the chest,” according to Ford.

Muldrew was taken into custody at the scene. The relationship between Clark and Muldrew is unknown, but they both lived at the apartment complex, Ford said.

Muldrew remains in jail as of Wednesday evening. Her bond is set at $750,000.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information on the case is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
