A homemade pipe bomb found in an empty lot in Newton drew response from both Newton and Wichita police.

A Newton police offer responded to a call of a “suspicious device” around 6:15 p.m. Saturday in the 900 block of N. Sherman, a Newton Police Department social media post said.

The officer examined the device and thought it was a homemade pipe bomb, the post said.

“It appeared as if ignition had been attempted but failed,” the post added.

The Wichita Police Department’s bomb disposal team was called and was able to examine and X-ray the device. The team determined “it was, in fact, an improvised explosive device,” according to the post.

The device was taken to Wichita to be processed, examined and safely disposed, the post said.
