They sat on the steps leading into a church or leaned against street signs, watching police officers work as yellow crime scene tape across the street billowed in a robust spring breeze Tuesday in the south Wichita neighborhood of Planeview.
Early chatter on the street had been that a man found dead inside a residence near the corner of Sayles and Rutan had committed suicide, a woman said. That street corner is northeast of Hillside and 31st Street South.
But as the day's light began to fade, word spread that the death was being investigated as a homicide.
Officers first arrived at the house in the 2900 block of South Sayles shortly before 5 p.m., Officer Charley Davidson said. They found a man in his 30s or 40s inside the house with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers were familiar with the residence from past occurrences," Davidson said.
A gun was found outside the residence. No information on a potential suspect or suspects has been released.
"We're still investigating the circumstances," Davidson said.
The identity of the man who was shot to death was not released Tuesday night. A woman who stood on the street corner across from where he died said she feared it might be someone she knows.
But even if it's not, she said, "it's bad news for somebody."
