A 13-year-old boy was shot in the chest while playing a video game in an east Wichita house and his older brother was arrested, police said.

Police were called to a reported shooting at a house in the 800 block of North Battin, near Central and Oliver, at around 12:15 p.m. on Monday, Officer Charley Davidson said. The 13-year-old boy had been shot in the chest and was taken to a hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The boy had been in a bedroom playing a video game with his 14-year-old brother, Davidson said. The older brother was handling a gun when it discharged and a bullet struck the younger brother, police said.

Investigators are working to determine what else led up to the shooting and how the boy got the gun, Davidson said.

Arrest reports show a 14-year-old boy was booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile, aggravated battery firearms and possession of marijuana in connection to the case.

Three simple devices, demonstrated by TJ Nigro, owner of Target Time Defense in Blue Springs, will keep guns safe in the home.
