A 45-year-old man was stabbed around midnight Saturday after refusing to place a bet on a foot race with a 17-year-old boy in the 1500 block of South Greenwood, Wichita police Sgt. Roger Runft said.
Runft gave the following account:
The man was visiting someone who lived in the neighborhood near Harry and Hydraulic, and he “for whatever reason, began conversing with a 17-year-old male, and they decided they wanted to start having a foot race in the street.”
The conversation turned to exchanging money for the winner of the race, and the man refused to do so, Runft said.
The teen then ran into the house the 45-year-old was visiting, came out with a knife and stabbed the man in the chest before fleeing the scene.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition with a punctured lung. He is expected to survive his injuries.
Police do not know if the 17-year-old and the 45-year-old knew each other, and have not located a suspect yet.
