A 55-year-old Hutchinson man was killed early Tuesday in a police shooting.

Richard R. Jones died after officers from the Hutchinson Police Department went to a home in the 3500 block of Ridgewood Drive at around 2 a.m. on a call about a troubled person, Capt. Troy Hoover wrote on the agency’s Facebook page. The person who contacted authorities to report the trouble wasn’t sure exactly what was wrong, Hoover said.

But officers entered the home with permission and began securing it “to ensure everyone’s safety,” he said.

While inside, police encountered a man in a bedroom armed with a handgun. He pointed the gun at officers, Hoover said, “forcing the officers to fire their weapons.”

Both officers fired their guns, according to a statement issued by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday night.

Jones was killed as a result, Hoover said on Facebook. No officers were hurt.

The KBI is leading the investigation of the shooting. The details of the investigation will be turned over to the Reno County attorney for review, Melissa Underwood, communications director for the KBI, said in a statement.

The home is near East 30th Avenue and Lorraine Street.
