Teen fires shots at officers in Council Grove, is wounded

A 17-year-old opened fire on law enforcement officers in Council Grove on Thursday, and he was wounded when one of them returned fire, authorities said.

Law enforcement officers in Council Grove received reports of shots being fired at a vehicle at about 9 a.m. on Thursday, according to a statement released by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. As officers responded, calls to 911 indicated the same suspect was firing a gun near the intersection of Seventh and Main.

When police officers and deputies from the Morris County Sheriff’s Office arrived, they found the suspect and gave him verbal commands, according to the KBI statement. The teen then fired at the officers. A Council Grove police officer returned fire, striking the shooter.

The suspect was initially taken to a local hospital, then transferred to a hospital in Topeka. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to the KBI.

No law enforcement officers were injured. The KBI has been called in to investigate the incident.

Once the investigation has been completed, the findings will be submitted to the Morris County attorney for review.
