Wichita police on Wednesday took into custody a male juvenile suspect in a murder case from Monday.

Sgt. Nikki Woodrow of the Wichita Police Department said a 16-year-old suspect was apprehended behind a home on the 1300 block of North Murray in west Wichita. The suspect, found in a shed, was taken into custody at about 1:30 p.m.

A man later identified as Quinton Gilliard, 37, was found with multiple gunshot wounds at a location on the 1100 block of North Terrace late Monday afternoon. Gilliard was later pronounced dead.

After being stopped in a vehicle, the suspect took off on foot, Woodrow said. Police searched for the juvenile for about an hour. McCollom and Peterson elementary schools were in lockdown for a time as the search ensued.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol (including air support) and the police department’s Special Community Action Team assisted on the call.
