Suspect in rape of 76-year-old woman pleads not guilty

A suspect in the rape of a 76-year-old woman last year made his first appearance in adult court Monday on rape and six other charges.

Marquatesz Redmon, who was 17 when the rape occurred, entered not guilty pleas to all charges, and District Judge Joseph Bribiesca scheduled a March 31 jury trial. Bribiesca set Redmon’s bond at $250,000.

Redmon was arrested after two intruders broke into the woman’s home near Lincoln and George Washington Boulevard on June 7. The woman testified at a hearing in August that her rapist held a gun to her head and threatened to come back and kill her if she called police.

The woman was unable to identify her attacker, but Wichita police said her DNA was on Redmon’s underwear when he was arrested.

A second suspect, John Edward Thompson, 19, also is awaiting trial.
