Wichita police said Thursday they have few leads and no motives in the city’s first two homicides of 2013.
Police said both victims were shot to death. Their names were not released.
Lt. Todd Ojile said the first victim, a 42-year-old man, drove to the QuikTrip at 13th and Oliver shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday and told a customer that he had been shot. An ambulance took the man to Wesley Medical Center, where he died at 11:57 p.m. of multiple gunshot wounds.
Ojile said officers later determined that the man had been shot in his car in the 1700 block of Northeast Parkway, which is northeast of the QuikTrip.
At the time the shooting call came out, police were investigating two armed robberies that occurred within nine minutes of each other along East 13th Street. Lt. Doug Nolte said officers later determined that the shooting was unrelated to a 6:50 p.m. holdup of the Dollar General Store at 1918 E. 13th St. or the 6:59 p.m. robbery of the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at 4794 E. 13th St.
The second homicide victim, a 29-year-old man, was found dead in his home in the 700 block of South Rutan about 2 a.m. by friends, Ojile said. He had been shot once and was found in the dining room of the home, which is northeast of Lincoln and Hillside.
Ojile said there was no sign of a disturbance in the home and no sign of forced entry. Ojile said the victim’s car – a 2003 silver Cadillac with a 60-day tag that reads A154298 – was missing from the home. He asked anyone who sees the car to call 911.
Ojile said detectives have no motive for either shooting.
The deaths marked the second straight year that the city has recorded two homicides during the opening days of the year.
Last year’s first homicide occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 1 in the 6300 block of South Madison when a 23-year-old man was shot outside a New Year’s Eve party. A 24-year-old suspect turned himself in to police on Jan. 3, 2012.
The second homicide of 2012 occurred the same morning when a 30-year-old man was stabbed to death in the 2500 block of West Wildwood, which is near Meridian and 31st Street South, after intervening in a dispute between a man and a woman. A 21-year-old suspect was arrested later that day.
The city finished 2012 with 28 homicides.
