Store robbery on North Broadway ends with clerk fatally shooting suspect

A robbery of a convenience store along North Broadway ended Thursday evening when a store clerk shot and fatally wounded one of two robbery suspects, Wichita police said.

Shortly after 7 p.m., two armed men entered KC Gas & Groceries store at 1161 N. Broadway, said Sgt. Ron Hunt of the Wichita Police Department. Police got a call about a robbery shortly afterward.

A store clerk fired a gun and shot one of the suspects, Hunt said. The other man ran out.

A police officer arrived minutes later to find a man lying on the floor of the store. The wounded man was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, where he was pronounced dead at 7:43 p.m., Hunt said.

Police officers searched the neighborhood of the store afterward, looking for the second suspect and for witnesses who Hunt said were in the store at the time.

Crime investigators were in the store working at the scene into the evening.

The store was robbed less than a week before, around midnight Friday. In that robbery, the store’s clerk had just closed up for the night when he was approached by two armed men. One pointed a gun at his chest and ordered him back into the store where they cleaned out the cash registers. They left on foot.

Hunt said he couldn’t comment on whether the robberies were related.

But it did rattle one nearby resident. Gayla Templeton said she had just moved into the area.

“It really does worry me,” she said. “With all the shootings, and stabbings and prostitution here. I can see it from my bedroom. They really need to clean this area up.”
