An East High School math teacher and part-time Butler Community College instructor has been charged in Municipal Court over an alleged indecency incident in a downtown Wichita parking lot.
The Wichita school board is aware of the charges, and the teacher, identified in records as Calvin J. Andrews, has been suspended with pay based on board policy, district spokeswoman Susan Arensman said today.
Andrews also has been a part-time instructor in the math department at Butler Community College since 1994, but the college can’t discuss his status because it learned of the charges only today and because it is a personnel issue, said Butler spokesman Ryan Entz.
Andrews, 49, is charged with a lewd and lascivious act and with public nudity over the March 2 incident and faces an April 9 court hearing on the misdemeanor charges, records show.
He could not be reached for comment.
According to a police report, three witnesses saw Andrews masturbating in his parked vehicle around 3 p.m. March 2 at 430 East Douglas.
A man who works in an office near that address told The Eagle that a co-worker said a man was masturbating in a mini-van in a parking lot visible from their office. The man said he walked to the office window, saw it and immediately called police.
The man, who is listed as “victim” in the police report, asked that his name not be used because he has a safety concern.
