A 49-year-old man is "lucky to be alive" after he was shot in the back of the head at close range early Monday morning, police said.
A maintenance man for a group of apartments in the 600 block of South Greenwood, he was sent to ask three men to turn down their music at about 12:40 a.m. Monday.
The three men invited the victim in, Lt. Doug Nolte said, but became angry when he told them why he was there. One of the men pulled a gun and threatened to kill the victim, Nolte said.
Despite the victim's pleas, the gunman then shot him in the left thigh. After he fell, he began crawling toward the door in an attempt to escape.
The gunman then shot him again in the head at close range, Nolte said. The bullet went through the victim's head but missed his brain, doctors told police.
"He's lucky to be alive," Nolte said of the victim.
The victim, who speaks Spanish, was able to talk to investigators through an interpreter. He said the apartment he went to has been the subject of previous complaints.
Police are looking for the tenants of the apartment. The shooting victim was in good condition at a hospital late Monday afternoon.
