Bottles on car lead to fatal fight

Beer bottles placed on a mother's car in an apartment complex parking lot quickly led to Wichita's 11th homicide of the year, police said Monday.

The victim was Jose Estrada-Andrade, 30, who died at a hospital shortly after he was shot three times at about 10 p.m. Saturday at the complex near 21st and Waco.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Estrada-Andrade and several co-workers were drinking in the parking lot when a 27-year-old man came out of the complex and complained about the beer bottles on his mother's car, Wichita police Lt. Ken Landwehr said.

Estrada-Andrade and the 27-year-old lived next door to each other in the complex, and there had been "bad blood" between them prior to Saturday's incident, Landwehr said.

Estrada-Andrade's friends left after the 27-year-old approached them. But Estrada-Andrade argued, and a fight between the two men ensued.

Estrada-Andrade used a large paint scraper during the fight, while the 27-year-old returned three times to his apartment to get weapons — two bed rails and a knife.

During the fight the 33-year-old — a roommate of the 27-year-old — shot Estrada-Andrade with a handgun, Landwehr said. One bullet hit him in the head and the two others in the torso.

Only three or four minutes elapsed between the time the argument started and the shooting, Landwehr said.

"It happened very quickly," he said.

The 33- and 27-year-olds left in the 33-year-old's vehicle. Both turned themselves in at different times Sunday, one at about 7 a.m. and the other at about noon.

The 27-year-old was not charged and released, Landwehr said. The 33-year-old was taken into custody.

The medium caliber handgun used in the incident has not been found. Police are asking if anyone finds a hand gun — probably between 17th and 21st streets and Broadway and Waco — to call 911.
