Hearing in N. Newton boy's death delayed

A pre-trial hearing for a man charged with murdering a North Newton toddler has been postponed until Sept. 17, Harvey County Attorney David Yoder said Tuesday.

The hearing for Chad Carr had been scheduled for today. Carr is charged in the March 27 death of 19-month-old Vincent Hill.

Another hearing for Carr — in an unrelated child pornography case — also has been postponed until Sept. 17. In that case, Carr is facing charges that he possessed child pornography videos.

Carr, 26, was the live-in boyfriend of Vincent's mother when the boy died. He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, aggravated battery and child abuse in Vincent's death.

Carr has remained in jail under a $375,000 bond.

Vincent's mother, Katheryn Nycole Dale, 21, has pleaded no contest to child abuse and aggravated child endangerment in the case involving her son.

At Carr's preliminary hearing earlier this summer, a deputy coroner testified that an autopsy and follow-up investigation showed that Vincent died from a brain injury caused by a lack of oxygen — most likely from suffocation. The brain injury was associated with multiple blunt-force injuries over Vincent's body, the official said.
