More than two dozen people were evacuated from the Rockborough Apartments early Friday during a two-alarm fire that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage. No one was hurt.
Wichita firefighters responded shortly after 6:30 a.m. Friday to 202 N. Rock Road and found a large amount of smoke pouring out of the building, Battalion Chief Sid Newby said. Fire was found between the walls of two apartments.
"It was hard to get to," Newby said, "but the crews did a good job."
He said that fire damage was contained to two apartments but that two additional units sustained smoke damage.

Twenty-five people were initially evacuated, but most were able to return to their apartments after the fire was extinguished, Newby said.
The Red Cross provided emergency shelter for five to eight people, he said.
Newby estimated the structural damage at $400,000, plus an additional $100,000 damage to contents because of the smoke.
"The two (apartments) were pretty much gutted," Newby said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
