Theft, burglary charges for pregnant woman

A pregnant woman believed to have stolen from west Wichita residents once they let her inside to make a telephone call has been arrested and charged, authorities said Friday.

Nicole L. Bell, 26, was charged Friday in Sedgwick County District Court with two counts of aggravated burglary and two counts of felony theft.

She is accused of stealing $245 from one west Wichita house on Nov. 1 and $103 from a second house on Nov. 18, court officials said.

Bell was taken into custody at her home in Maize on Thursday and arrested at City Hall later that night after questioning, police said.

Authorities earlier this week issued an alert saying a pregnant woman had been going to homes in west Wichita, claiming that her car had broken down and that she needed to call for help.

Once inside, police said, the woman earned the confidence of residents, then gained access to cash when they weren't looking.

She had been seen driving a white, four-door car.

Bell's preliminary hearing has been set for Dec. 3.
