Three men are in custody and police are looking for two others after a vehicle chase in south Wichita sent a woman to the hospital and prompted the theft of a pickup from a bank's drive-through lane around 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The pickup, a 1991 white Chevy S10 with Kansas tag number 456 CDK, was stolen by a man suspected of jumping bail as he fled three bail bondsmen who were pursuing him in two trucks, said Capt. John Speer, commander of the Patrol South Bureau.
The man stole the S10 after it was left unoccupied in the drive-through lane of the Bank of America branch in the 500 block of East Pawnee by a woman who had seen the bail bondsmen's trucks ramming the maroon Dodge pickup they pursued, Speer said.
The woman driving the Dodge pickup was knocked out of the truck by the impact and then was run over by one of the bondsmen, he said. She was taken to a local hospital in fair condition.
Both trucks with bail bondsmen in them fled after the woman was run over.
Police pulled over one truck a few blocks from the bank and took two of the bondsmen into custody. The second truck was found in a residential area, Speer said, but the driver had fled.
A passenger in the Dodge pickup ran into the automotive bays of the Wal-Mart in the 500 block of East Pawnee and was apprehended by police, Speer said.
The person who stole the S10 remained at large. Anyone who sees the pickup should call 911, Speer said.
"We have numerous witnesses; they all got different stories," said Wichita police Lt. E.J. Bastian.".. This is extremely confusing."
