Abortion-rights groups in Wichita will host a Repro Rally at 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Old Town Square, Second and Mead. Repro Rally refers to reproductive rights.
“It’s an opportunity to come together and remember why we do this work,” said Julie Burkhart, founder and CEO of Trust Women, the foundation that opened Trust Women South Wind Women’s Center, the only surgical abortion clinic in Wichita.
The rally comes a week before anti-abortion protesters are expected to visit Wichita for the 25th reunion of Summer of Mercy, the 46-day anti-abortion demonstration of 1991.
The Repro Rally is sponsored by several local abortion-rights organizations: Trust Women, Planned Parenthood Great Plains, which offers the abortion pill at its Wichita clinic, the Peggy Bowman Second Chance Fund, Wichita NOW (National Organization for Women) and the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Wichita.
Saturday’s rally will feature several speakers, including Burkhart of South Wind; Laura McQuade, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Plains; Rep. Gail Finney, D-Wichita; Vickie Stangl, former political science professor at Wichita State University and past president of Wichita NOW, and others.
The organizations sponsoring the event also encourage participants to make signs.
