Valerie Horn jokingly called it a “tragedy.”
An overnight car crash near University Congregational Church, 9209 E. 29th St. North, spelled the end for the church’s recently-built Little Free Library – though church leaders are hopeful it can be salvaged.
“We’ve kind of gathered all the pieces together,” Horn said.
Horn said someone was driving on Cypress Street across 29th, lost control at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday and ran into a speed limit sign before hitting the little library.

Because no one was at the church at 2 a.m., a police officer tucked the incident report for the crash “inside of the door of what remained of the library itself,” said Horn, a bookkeeper at the church.
Little Free Library is a national program in which people put books inside a small cubby outside – people can take and leave books at the libraries.
The libraries – which have to be registered with the national program – have begun cropping up in Wichita in recent years.
The little library was hand-built by a church member to resemble the church.
