Police car totaled when 19-year-old crashes into it at mall

A Wichita police patrol car was totaled by a teenage driver speeding through a mall parking lot Saturday night.

Sgt. Steve Yarberry said officers were responding a hit-and-run accident in the Towne West Square parking lot at around 11:10 p.m. Saturday.

A 19-year-old driving a Dodge Stratus was speeding through the parking lot, Yarberry said.

“(He) was unable to make a turn and struck the police vehicle,” Yarberry said.

The driver was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries, Yarberry said. The officer wasn’t injured.

The police car was taken out of service because of the damage.

Police are still investigating the accident.
