On Friday an online petition was started to honor Hesston police chief Doug Schroeder at the White House.

Schroeder confronted, shot and killed Cedric Ford at a manufacturing plant in Hesston on Thursday. Ford had already shot 17 other people, killing three, before he was confronted by Schroeder in the front part of the office building.

Schroeder was called a hero by the Harvey County sheriff and by Gov. Sam Brownback for helping save the hundreds of others in the factory on Thursday.

On Wednesday the petition had around 500 signatures, more than the 150 required in the first 30 days. But it must reach 100,000 within another 30 days to guaruntee a response.
