Wichita high school student arrested after gun found in his backpack

A Metro-Boulevard Alternative High School student was arrested Monday after school staff found a gun in his backpack at school, police said.

Shortly before 1 p.m. Monday, two students — a male 18-year-old and a female 15-year-old — got into an argument at the school at 751 George Washington Boulevard, Lt. James Espinoza said.

“He told her to turn down her music,” Espinoza said. “She refused.”

He told her again. She refused again. At that point, she reported, the older student displayed “what she thought was a magazine for a firearm,” Espinoza said.

She notified a counselor and school staff found a handgun in his backpack. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault with a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm, Espinoza said.
