Fire heavily damaged a house near West Street early Friday morning, authorities said.
The fire was reported at 1:07 a.m. at 3606 W. Third St., a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said. That’s northeast of Second and West streets.
Fire crews arriving on the scene reported the fire was coming from the back of the house and spread to engulf a car sitting in the driveway. But it took little more than 10 minutes for firefighters to extinguish the blaze at the nearly 1,000-square-foot house built in 1958.
An investigation revealed the fire actually started in the car and spread to the house, Fire Lt. Joe Evans said. Along with the house, the blaze damaged a privacy fence and another vehicle parked in the driveway.
It also melted siding on a house east of where the fire started, Evans said. Damage was estimated at $25,000.
