Wichita police are investigating a possible bomb threat Monday afternoon at the South Wind Women’s Center.

Police were called to the women’s center, which offers reproductive health care including abortions, at 3:34 p.m. Monday. South Wind staff reported having received a suspicious package, and the women’s center was evacuated.

“A male had come into the clinic with a backpack to do business with the clinic,” said Capt. Doug Nolte, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department. “The clinic does have security on-site, and when they looked into his backpack they found some knives and an improvised explosive device.”

A bomb squad was summoned to remove the backpack, Nolte said.

There were no injuries, and the device was secured, said Deputy Police Chief John Speer.

Speer said the FBI and ATF are also involved in the investigation.

More information is expected to be released Tuesday morning, authorities said.
