Wichita fire officials are investigating a Saturday garage fire near Central and Rock Road that left one person dead.
The fire department responded to a call at 11:45 a.m. in the 600 block of North Doreen and found “a good volume” of flames engulfing a detached garage, according to Wichita Fire Department Battalion Chief Stuart Bevis. Firefighters fought to get the fire under control, he said.
A man, 65, was found dead in a work area of the garage. Although an autopsy was performed this weekend, the victim has not been identified yet. According to other occupants of the house, the man had been working in the yard before heading to the garage, Bevis said.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
The damage to the garage was estimated at $30,000 and another $150,000 to the contents of the garage.
This was the second fire death of the year, Bevis said.
